So, first we arrived in Prague. We actually had a layover in Paris and I cannot tell you how badly I wanted to leave the airport and look around, but our layover was for only about an hour and a half. Oh well. The plane ride over was horrible. We got zero sleep and long plane rides are just not much fun. As soon as we got to Prague, we went to where Adam & Kelley’s families were (actually, the Burke’s and part of Kelley’s family) had yet to arrive. As soon as we got there, Kelley had stuff lined up for us to do (going to walk charles bridge, going to see Prague "Hradcany" Castle, going to dinner, going on a lunch cruise, wedding rehearsal, etc.) It was pretty non-stop! Their wedding was beautiful!! They got married in st. nicholas church, which was incredible! Prague was much prettier than I imagined. I didn't even know where it was at first! It was pretty “old” feeling...the streets were cobblestone and it was actually a really awesome place to see. Oh, btw, we did not see the restaurant from Mission Impossible that got blown up (a question we get asked by many!)

The night of the wedding (they had a morning/afternoon wedding) we left Prague and took an overnight train to Salzburg. As soon as we got on the train, the steward for our cabin came up to us and said, “Now, let me warn you. There are these “brown-colored” people, “gypsies”, that will come on the train and take your money.” We were confused, because the door locks seemed to be pretty strong, but he said it didn’t matter and that they would still try to take your money. At this point, Matt started freaking out because of the thought of someone coming into our room to steal our stuff. He asked the guy, “Well, what do we do if we see one?” and the guy told us that they didn’t “want violence” and that if they saw you looking at them, they would just leave. Well, Matt’s thinking was if you see someone coming into your house to steal your stuff, you either beat them up or kill them! You don’t just look at them to make them go away! Anyway, Matt set up all these other “alarms” and attached the hangers from the closets to the door and the closet door. Needless to say, we didn’t sleep well that trip.

We arrived in Salzburg early in the morning and checked into our hotel. That morning, we decided to just walk around downtown Salzburg. This place is so beautiful and clean! If you ever go to Europe, you’ll have to go to Salzburg. We just walked around downtown, ate lunch, saw a couple buildings, but everything was pretty much closed because it was Sunday. That afternoon, we went on the Sound of Music Tour, which sounds really cheesy, but it’s really cool. We went to the front and back of the house in the movie (which were two different houses). We also went to the hellbrun castle, which houses the gazeebo where "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" was shot, but we can't find the picture of us there! Matt did not understand the feelings a girl feels towards this scene in the movie! As a child, I remember running around our room, pretending that we were liesel! We went to an area on the outskirts of town where they make all the lace for Salzburg. In the movie, the scenery is shot here. We went to a bunch of places in between there, just basically driving around the country. Then we went to Mondsee Cathedral, which is the church that they got married in (in the movie). Then the tour ended at Mirabell Gardens, which was a few blocks from our hotel. This is the garden in the movie that the kids are running around in and singing “do re mi”. That night, we just went back and crashed and slept for about twelve hours! We were so tired.

On the tour, the tour guide had mentioned being able to go up on the top of Untersberg, which is the mountain that Julie Andrews is dancing around in front of in the beginning of the movie. Now, seeing the Alps was the thing that Matt wanted to do the most while in Europe. We had no idea you could actually go to the TOP of them! So, we took a bus to the bottom of Untersberg and took a cable car up! When we went to buy our tickets, the guy asked us if we knew how cold it was, which was 2 degrees farernheight. But, including the windchill, it was SO MUCH COLDER. I mean, obviously, we were not prepared to hike this mountain because we didn’t even know we could! Anyway, we went up top and had an AWESOME view of Salzburg. Again, it was so cold!! And the snow on top of the mountain was so deep. Matt took video of him climbing the mountain that is hilarious. He held the camera like a football and just tried to walk! The mountain does not really have anything to keep you from flying off, so of course I was very cautious and only walked a little bit around the mountain because that wind was so strong it probably could’ve knocked you over the edge if it wanted. To give you an idea of how clean Salzburg is, when we were at the bus station to return to the center of Salzburg, it had just rained. A little bit after the light rain storm blew through, there was a gentleman that came outside in full rain gear - hat, jacket, pants, and boots - who swept all the sticks, leaves, and other falling debris that the storm had left!

Anyway, that day, we left Salzburg and felt like we wished we had more time to spend there. We didn’t even get to see Hohensalzburg Fortress, which is the castle of Salzburg.

That evening, we took a short train ride to Munich. Here, we met up with Adam & Kelley! We thought it was a little strange that they’d want to hang out with us on their honeymoon, but hey (!!) - it was their idea! But, we sure are glad that we did...it was a lot of fun to spend time with them. That evening, we went and ate at this place called the Augustiner. This is where Matt had his first taste of Weisswurst, which is a white sausage that they serve with Saurkraut and a sweet mustard, senf. He loved it, but I just thought YUCK!! After dinner, we went to the infamous Hofbrauhaus. This is one of the major beer halls in Munich. We walked in and there were just TONS of people! There was a polka band and everything! We sat down at this table with two guys who were actually from Virginia! Small world! Let me tell you, everyone said that after I went to Germany, I’d love beer. Well, I still hate it. When we got there, I just asked if I could have a coke. The guy looked at me and said, “coke and beer?” They don’t serve just plain coke! Anyway, I got a radler, which is the lightest brew of beer, and which is basically half sprite and half beer. I think I took one sip only! It was a fun place to go.

The next day, we went to this place called Schloss Nymphenburg. It’s a castle that King Ludwig built and whenever he would see a beautiful girl, he would have her picture painted. The funny thing about it is that most of the girls he had pictures painted of were commoners. The idea of a king finding commoners so beautiful was like an oxymoron. All of the pictures are displayed in the Gallery of Beauties.

After that, we met up with Adam & Kelley and went to the BMW museum. It was so boring. Even Matt and Adam thought so. After that we went to this art museum. I don't even know the name of it...I think at this point, we were just trying to kind of kill time. Then we met up with Adam’s family and had dinner at The Ratskeller. The name sounds weird, but the food was incredible and we had THE MOST AWESOME dessert there. The best dessert was called Apple Fritters and they were so delicious. I found a recipe, so we’re going to try to make them sometime! We left the next morning and made our way to Fussen.

We met up with Adam & Kelley and made our way to Fussen. They rented a car and we went on the Autobahn! It was actually a huge letdown when we realized we were only going about 90 mph. We stopped and looked at a random church and also saw Schloss Linderhof along the way. It’s funny because King Ludwig II decided that he wanted a grotto built, so of course, the King gets what he wants! It was inspired by the Venus Grotto from Wagner's "Tannhäuser". We walked through and it had stalagmites that were made out of plaster, but that actually looked real! There was even a little pond with a rowboat inside the grotto! Crazy.

Then we arrived in the tiny town of Fussen. The next day, we went to these two amazing castles! The first was Hohenschwangau. This was a tiny castle, but very pretty. Then we took a bus ride to Neuschwantsein, which was beautiful! The castle in Disney World is actually modeled after this castle. In between our visiting the second castle, we went up on this huge, suspended bridge. The planks were all rickety and it was pretty scary. Matt, Kelley, and Adam climbed up this huge cliff and were basically hanging off it just to get a cool picture...I thought they are crazy! ;)
